Tori Matsu, King St Melbourne CBD

A few weeks ago, I had a girls night out with Michelle and Susan. However, I booked a bit too late and all the places I had wanted to eat at were booked out since it was a Friday night. So, out of convenience, we decided to go to Tori Matsu, a Japanese restaurant near my old work. It is situated near the corner of King and William St and usually caters for the workers around that area. They open for lunch and dinner and has all you can eat BBQ for $29.95 for female patrons (the price has dropped compared to their online menu) and $33.80 for male patrons.

This time we decided to order a la carte instead of all you can eat to try some different dishes. I can't remember the prices because I'm very bad at getting receipts when I dine with more than 1 other person :S.

We wanted to order fried oysters but it was not available so we settled for the usual gyoza (Japanese dumplings). I liked it, the skin was thin and the pork filling was tasty. Although a bit less soggy (from all the sauce) would have gone a long way.

We also ordered their sushi platter which was finished instantly (I guess we were hungry!), although there weren't many varieties of sushi/sashimi on the platter (just the usual salmon, tuna, kingfish and the odd prawn) it was still fresh and delicious. I have had better at other restaurants though.

Susan wanted to order soba (cold buckwheat noodles) and I wanted to order rice so we ended up with quite a bit of stomach-filling food, not to mention I didn't know there was going to be udon with the nabe (hotpot) we got as our main. The soba was good, but like I mentioned in my Sushi Masa post, soba is hard to get wrong.

I was surprised at how tasty the nabe actually was. It included such ingredients as cabbage, tofu, carrot, bean shoots and spring onions. The subtle sweetness of the broth and flavourful ingredients made me want to eat more.

The nabe came with separate uncooked pork cut to just the right thickness. I liked how we had the choice to cook the meat as we ate them so none of it was overcooked. We got two people's worth of the nabe so that we can order other food so depending on how many people you have, the amount will be different.

We were all in a good mood that day so decided to get 3 desserts, one for each person. They were parfaits with green tea, red bean and black sesame flavours, with just the right amount of sweetness. I remember these were $8.95 each. The only problem was the cornflakes at the bottom, it was very difficult to scoop them out while the ice-cream was still on top so in the end we all left a clump of it uneaten.

Overall I liked the meal at Tori Matsu. Their service was good, the owner/waiter came around to pour my drink after I finished what was in my glass and took a nice photo of us girls at the conclusion of the meal :D. I liked both their BBQ and a la carte having had experience with the BBQ on numerous previous visits, however, I found that a la carte allows more choice, plus Yuye knows how to cut gyutan (ox tongue) now so I don't really like to order them in restaurants anymore :P. Although not the best, Tori Matsu offers authentic and tasty Japanese food at reasonable prices. If you're looking for a place to eat that can offer you good service and reasonably nice food, consider dining here.

  2. @batasan, stop being so mean!!! :(...but it's true that you should pay more than me since you eat so much more :P

In fact, now that I think about it, the nabe was kind of like the one we had at Yuye's, except without the seafood. The pot even looks like yours.

  5. @Milton, it was indeed, and fun too! I felt like a high schooler giggling and eating those desserts with my girl friends. :) I should go on those girls' nights more! It was a shame they ran out of the oysters though.
