Mitre Tavern, Melbourne CBD

I've never really liked farewell parties. They always made me sad as usually a friend is leaving for good. I don't like saying goodbyes like most people wouldn't. The other day I went to Ichi's farewell dinner at Mitre Tavern, he's an ex-colleague who gave me a lot of guidance in terms of where to go for good ramen in Japan and good restaurants in Melbourne.

Mitre Tavern is a pub with a steakhouse upstairs. We planned to have steak that night but made a mistake as we didn't know that in order to have steak, we had to be seated upstairs. The waitress whispered "there's not many people upstairs so please decide whether you want to move up soon as they are about to leave." That was quite interesting.

In the end, we decided to stay where we were and ordered the 'special rump steak' instead that was available downstairs. Yuye ordered the steak with mushroom sauce for $20. I didn't try the steak until it got cold as I was busy with my dish but from what I could tell, it wasn't such a bad steak. I had my biases though because I just had wagyu a few nights ago and NOTHING can beat wagyu. I didn't like the mushroom sauce as it was too sweet and the fries were a bit thick and dry.

Rump Steak - $20

I ordered a beef and guinness pie for $16.90 which I thought was a better dish, however, I have had better. It was a very big dish despite what it looks like.

Beef & Guinness Pie - $16.90

The bowl was deep. It hid the chunky pieces of beef and mushroom inside which quickly filled me up. I thought the beef was a bit too dry and overcooked but the sauce was still tasty - I could distinctly taste the sweet aromas of guinness.

The pastry on top was very interesting indeed. It had multiple layers and puffed up like a mushroom hat on the bowl. It was very crunchy but made a total mess when I tried to eat it.

Susan, also an ex-colleague, ordered spring rolls to share. I almost thought they were pig tails or something based on their shape. They were actually very nice as they contained whole cut prawns instead of the usual prawn paste.

Spring rolls with sweet chilli sauce - $9.90

Here's a few other dishes my friends ordered, as I didn't taste any of these, I can't make comments about how they taste. They are merely there as food porn. :)

Gourmet Steak Sandwich - $18.50
Chilli Con Carne - not sure how much as it was on the specials board

Although the meal was not bad, I've had better steak and beef guinness pie elsewhere. Perhaps due to Mitre Tavern's location and the fact that many companies have yet to return back to work, it seemed a little empty, especially having no one upstairs. I did think it was a nice place for a catch up and the service was good. I really want to try their steakhouse next time as it seems to have good reviews.

I am going to miss Ichi and his bows, but not to worry as I will surely be visiting Japan some time this year. By then I will have a personal tour guide around Tokyo! :D

  3. @Lorraine, it really was quite quiet but apparently the pub section gets quite busy during work days..

@Choux-Fleur, I love beef pots too! It wasn't as good as I hoped though..

  4. Those spring rolls look really good. And it drives me crazy when restaurants only think of how something will look, rather thank how it eats. That puff on top of your stew just looks impossible.
